Mortar Board member Michael Kmetz, an energy commerce major, received a scholarship from the Texas Business Hall of Fame. On Oct.27, he was recognized at the annual induction reception.
Attending the 34th Texas Business Hall of Fame Induction and being honored as a 2016 scholarship recipient was one of the highlights of my life.
After attending a luncheon with some of the greatest business leaders in Texas, I was struck with the humility and approachability of this year's business legends, including Gary Kelly, CEO of Southwest Airlines and Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway.
Following the luncheon, we headed over to reception which predicated the black tie induction dinner at the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio. At the reception, each of the scholarship recipients had an hour and a half to network with some of the most accomplished leaders from around the state and country.
During dinner, the 36 recipients representing Texas universities were each called to the stage, recognized as "future business legends," and honored with a standing ovation from the 1,100 individuals in attendance.
The evening was particularly special for me because my parents and older brother (who won the same scholarship in 2014) were in attendance. One of the directors mentioned that this was the first time two siblings have won the award in 34 year history. The highlights of the reception were definitely chatting with Senator Cruz and sneaking back to the VIP lounge and having a brief exchange with Warren Buffett whom I never imagined I'd meet.
As the evening concluded, I was filled with gratitude for the life-changing opportunities Texas Tech, the Honors College, and Mortar Board have given me.
I've never been prouder to be a Red Raider!
